How Can You Relax During Lockdown?

Hard working mamas have little enough time to relax on a usual basis, but with the unprecedented arrival of Covid-19, many are finding life even more stressful than usual. Of course self-isolating is absolutely the right thing to be doing in order to save lives, but there’s no denying it’s pretty punishing on parents. Many of whom are now with their families 24/7 or trying to juggle a job and looking after the kids without any access to childcare or even extended family to help out. It may be what we need to do, but there’s no denying it’s tough to have even less space – physical and mental – than ever, and little wonder that a lot of us are struggling. In these times, mental health is more important than ever. We need to keep sane in order to take care of our families and deal with the understandable levels of anxiety we are all feeling right now. This is more of a challenge than ever during lockdown, but it can be done – if you’re aware of making space for you and your mental health, everyone will benefit.

Keep Active

Never underestimate the importance of staying active in order to alleviate your mental healthand help you relax. Gyms may be shut, but there’s still a lot you can do to keep moving. This could be roping the kids into doing Joe Wicks’ daily 9am PE class, or you might want to do something more gentle, like following Yogalates on YouTube. If you get the opportunity to use your own permitted outdoor exercise each day, you could choose to follow a programme like Couch 2 5k, which can get even the most reluctant runners up to a 5k distance over nine weeks using interval training. It could even be something like doing the Plank Challengeeach evening – perhaps you’ll even be able to come out of lockdown fitter than ever! However, it’s more about the mental space and relaxation that releasing those endorphins can give you. Getting outside each day, even just for a short walk, also helps reset the body’s Circadian Rhythms and may help you get to sleep easier each night.

Take A Regular Wind Down Break

At work, we normally have allotted times where we take a break away from our screens and our thought processes to give our brains a rest. Unfortunately, at home and away from our usual routines, this can quickly go out the window. We are either working doubly hard juggling our job and our kids, or the lack of a structure means we’re working across the dayand late into the night. This is so bad for our physical and mental health, so use a scheduling app to remind you to take regular screen breaks, and try some desk stretches every 50 minutes or so. When it comes to the end of the day, be strict about shutting that computer down and doing something to mark the end of the day, even if it’s just a hot drink with relaxing properties like Evocoffee, CBD coffee or changing into comfier clothes.
